HISTORY OF ILLINOIS

Illinois has been a major destination since 1810, when the first settlers began arriving and building homes and cities.

It became an official state in 1818, and it grew very rapidly. Chicago, Illinois' largest city, was founded in the 1830s and quickly grew prosperous, thanks to its location on the shores of Lake Michigan, as well as having rivers to connect it to other major waterways and cities. Illinois vastly expanded economically largely due to the railroads. The state's agricultural wealth, corporate power and industrial developments have helped to make Illinois a powerful leader in the United States.

Four of America's most famous presidents have been part of Illinois' proud history: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Ronald Regan,and Barack Obama. Their legacy is part of the hard-work ethic and optimism that is shared among the people of Illinois, and there are many places you can visit to learn about each president's heritage.

LEARNING AND LIVING IN ILLINOIS

There are more than 75 colleges and universities and over 50 community colleges in Illinois. Many of these schools are members of Study Illinois and offer very welcoming campuses for international students. All are located in a wide variety of cities, towns, and rural settings. Each offers you quality education in a state that provides you plenty of professional experiences and exposure to American culture and pastimes.
If you want the excitement of living in one of the world's most dynamic cities, Chicago is the place to be. Universities such as Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, and Illinois Institute of Technology allow you mix cosmopolitan amenities with cutting-edge research and a vast array of internship opportunities. Art and media schools such as Columbia College and School of the Art Institute will expose you to numerous learning and exhibition outlets.
If you want to be close to Chicago but in a less urban environment, there are many suburban colleges to choose. Elmhurst College, College of DuPage, College of Lake County, Lake Forest College, and Moraine Valley Community College are all less than an hour away from Chicago, either by commuter train or car.
There are large state universities that are set in traditional "college towns" and offer a multitude of majors, sporting events, and social organizations within the university itself. Maybe you are looking for a more natural setting? Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is only minutes away from some of Illinois' most beautiful parks and forests, such as the Shawnee National Forest. These parks offer lots of trails for hiking, camping, and rock climbing.
Illinois also offers lots of opportunities to experience the American small-town lifestyle. Schools such as Monmouth College and Knox College are set in rural areas and offer a traditional campus setting within small, friendly communities.
